Karen Tyler is today one of the most lauded blues musicians in the West, and her love of acoustic blues music goes way back. She started listening to blues music when she lived in California in the 80s. She fell in love with the acoustic blues thanks to live performances from musicians like Tom Ball, Kenny Sultan and Peter Mac. Karen moved to Austin, Texas to become a part of the vibrant live blues music scene and to make a name for herself.
Though she was often discouraged at the beginning, Karen eventually released several albums, to much critical acclaim and has toured extensively in California and Texas with great success. Perhaps Karen’s most noted feature is her voice, which truly sets her apart from other acoustic blues musicians. Austin Blues Monthly praises her vocal cords, “This lady has a voice…a great voice…sultry and smoky…one of my favorite blues vocalists.” Unlocked Austin’s site says, “Her voice is rich and supple enough to bend, wail and caress a song.” Steve Harvell of Big Daddy BluzHarp, an online blues publication, proclaims, “Karen Tyler is, in my opinion, the best female vocalist that I have ever heard in my 46 years of living…”
With such a great voice, it’s no wonder Karen pleases fans across the country. She has won numerous awards from blues publications for her several albums. She combines a sultry, sassy singing style with superb songwriting. She doesn’t disappoint with her guitar-playing either. Karen Tyler is definitely an Austin star on the rise.
